It seems the UnrealIRCd source had a backdoor inserted a while back, and three of our servers (resync, xiphos, and hercules) had been built from the backdoored source. Since resync was already due for retirement and has not been in DNS for quite a while now, we just retired it a little earlier. The other two servers, hercules and xiphos, will be down until further notice; the DNS entries have already been replaced, so you would have been connected to an alternative server automatically.

New services
— Posted Wed, 11 Feb 2009 by mithrandi
Work on the new services package continues. The project has now been renamed to Kali, and development is occurring on Launchpad. Most of the basic protocol / controller implementation is in place now, and very basic NickServ functionality is also present. The main missing piece at this stage is ChanServ, although there are also some other miscellaneous bits and pieces that will need to be added to other services.
If you are interested in contributing, feel free to file bugs, upload branches / patches, and so on. Please note that any contributions must be reviewed by at least one person on the coding team before they will be accepted; also, if you're planning to get involved this stage, getting in touch with someone on the coding team is probably a good idea, to make sure that you're on the right track, not duplicating any existing work, and so that any design decisions can be discussed properly.
The Future of Shadowfire
— Posted Fri, 27 Jun 2008 by nim
There are a handful of things expected to change over the next year, and I would like to take this opportunity to discuss our future plans. Two of the more important changes involve our services package, and our ircd.
IRCServices
IRCServices has reached the end of it's life cycle and was designed with a lot of old and antiquated principles that are not conducive to the way we envision a modern irc network operating. In response to this, our developers are actively working on a new services database written completely in Python, named SHS. It will contain a lot of backwards compatibility with most of the commands you know and love from IRCServices, and will become part of Ares once finished. More on the details of this will be released as I know more.
Inspircd
We are planning to change to Inspircd. This IRCD, in our opinion, is much better written. It has a modular design which will allow us to improve security, and better expand to meet the needs of our users. This will follow the completion of SHS, as it is being designed to operate with Inspircd.
Both of these changes are designed so we can better evolve and tailor our service to suit our exact requirements.
Mibbit

We have made some noise about Mibbit recently.
It is a great web based IRC client for those stuck behind firewalls, and we have arranged an official listing in their client and a trust relation with their server such that clients information may be injected into our network on their behalf. Essentially this means you appear as any other client with your IP address, and you can be banned without effecting anyone else! Excellent stuff indeed :)
It is our hope that people can now disband all their horrendous CGI-IRC implementations (which often cause us a great deal of problems) and use this instead.
Updates to AresServ
— Posted Wed, 12 Mar 2008 by Karnaugh
AresServ has been in need of some fixes for some time. Finally being home with the flu has allowed this to happen. Here is the list of changes:
We noticed some people appending @ to their masks. Although this obviously wasn't a requirement, we were forced to reject these applications since the @ is always added by the server and is an invalid mask. The application form now strips this and other silly additions from masks.
Moderators can now give a reason for an application rejection which is passed onto the person who made the application. This should make it a little more obvious to people why their application was rejected and what they can do to get a successful application.
People were confused about the form returning you back to itself on submission which resulted in many duplicate requests. The form will now tell you your application was processed successfully.
Some command typos and links were updated in the service and the application form.

xiphos.shadowfire.org is now out of trial and is in the za.shadowfire.org round robin. It is located in Pretoria, South Africa and is hosted by ldcdc at SAIX.
Finally!
— Posted Sun, 10 Feb 2008 by k4y
Well, it's been a long time coming but it has finally happened. Shadowfire's website has had a major overhaul (for the better!)
Along with the new website we've introduced the Shadowfire Knowledge Base which will hopefully grow into a useful source of information for all things Shadowfire related.
Please direct all comments / suggestions / praise to #shadowfire.
As a parting note, we'd like to mention there are some more exciting changes in the pipeline. Stay tuned!
